"Some of the greatest scientists of all time were females who have made important discoveries in a variety of fields in science. Several of their contributions throughout history have even surpassed those of their male counterparts."

Each family will choose a female scientist and make a short presentation or display about their work, if we can fit in a few experiments then all the better.

Tour of Cathaleen Falls Hyrdo Electric Station

Cathaleen Falls, Ballyshannon

Cathaleen's Fall

Booking essential. Please let us know if you would like to come. Arrive 11/11:15 to start the hour-long tour at 11;30.

"The construction of the Erne Hydro Electric Scheme after the Second World War was a major boost for County Donegal. The development prompted a building boom in the region which saw an employment increase surge in construction bringing engineers, electricians and other hydro-specialists from both at home and abroad to the town of Ballyshannon when work began in 1946.

At Ballyshannon, and on the stretch of the River between the sea, the natural fall of water is 45m, which makes the Erne catchment the perfect location to house the hydro-electric dams. The River Erne itself is 60 miles long and is the second largest river system in Ireland. From its source at Slieve Clah in County Cavan (200m above sea level), it winds its way through Loughs Gowna, Oughter, Upper and Lower Erne before it enters the Belleek Channel. Two power stations were built on the river – one at Cliff and a larger at Cathaleen's Fall. They were commissioned in November 1951 and April 1952 respectively.

ESB is offering FREE guided tours of the Cathaleen's Fall Generating Station which is located in Ballyshannon in County Donegal."

Deep Sea Co-op

Tue, 14/04/2015 (All day)
Deep Sea Co-op
Marquis Hall, Bangor

For our Deep Sea Co-op we had the honour of welcoming Marine Biologist Claire Goodwin who works for the National Museums Northern Ireland. She had just come back from a trip to the Antarctic and gave us a talk about her work collecting and identifying sponges. She also brought along her dive kit so we could see how much protection she needs to dive in such cold waters. Claire also brought along some of her sponge samples to look at under the microscope.

Before the co-op we had collected some seawater samples and were able to make slides up of plankton to identify under the microscope. We were able to identify plankton with the help of the publication Marine Zooplankton of Southern Britain which is available to download Marine Zooplankton of Southern Britain

There were also some underwater related crafts to entertain the younger children.
